Kitchen Gadgets ……… To Spin or not to spin?

So, I’m not really a gadget girl.  Never have been, probably never will be.  I find them to be annoying, bulky and just plain in the way, especially in the kitchen.  I try to limit my kitchen items to the essentials.  As some of you know we recently remodeled out kitchen and in doing so added a dishwasher.  While the addition of the dishwasher has been fantastic and revolutionary for my marriage, it also meant that I had to give up some cabinet space.  So now, we just don’t have the space to even store gadgets.

However!  Since we began getting our CSA share the first week in June, I heard people raving about their salad spinners.  I suggested this to my husband.  He felt as we both feel about gadgets, that this would probably be an unnecessary addition to our wares and ultimately end up in the way.  So, I kept washing my greens and trying to store them, but they just weren’t lasting more than a couple of days.  I broke down……………

I ran to the closest Macy’s department store and bought the Martha Stewart Collapsible Salad Spinner.

Ah yes, collapsible.  That’s how I justified it to my hubby!  It won’t take up much space, it’s collapsible!!!! It’s again been revolutionary.  Takes up very little space, gets our weekly greens from Denison Farm’s CSA share very clean and the greens seem to last longer once they are well washed and stored.  (I’m probably imagining this.)  So, long story short, I’m a convert on this particular kitchen gadget.

Do you have any kitchen gadgets that you can’t work without?

I have this and love it, too! The collapse design is what sold me, and now I don’t know how I ever lived wiht wet lettuce. 🙂

Salad spinners are a must for homegrown lettuce- glad you are enjoying your new purchase!
I cannot live without my Braun Immersion Blender – I use it almost daily! I first got it when I had Cooper and was making her baby food- the thought of getting out the food processor every time I wanted to blend a small amount of food was a pain, but with the Chopping container with blade you can do it right in there. I use the immersion part for soups, apple sauce, smoothies, just about anything. I use the whisk for whipping- don’t have to pull out the mixer. It is now the gift I give at baby showers, if I know the Mom will be making a lot of the baby food. Oh, and it does not take up any counter/cabinet space it came with a wall mounter so you can mount it, like inside a cabinet wall- viola it’s out of the way. Again, I love this. Oh, and I can’t live without the basic wine bottle opener:)

I’m so glad you did this post. I too have been wondering about salad spinners. Thanks for the recommendation.

Just like Nisha, I was also looking into salad spinners. I keep picking them up at different stores- Michael Grave’s version at Target, Oxo’s at Bed Bath & Beyond, ect ect. But I kept putting them back because they seemed pricey and BULKY. I love that this one collapses. Unlike you Sarah, I love me some kitchen gadgets, but like you I have a small amount of shelf space. 😉

Emma, I too love the Immersion blender set. Couldn’t live without it.
