FSC Book Club: the no-stress virtual cook-along book club!

THE SCOOP

We read, we cook, we chat.
That is the FSC Book Club.

Join us in an on-going, virtual community discussion of some of the best food writing out there. Share photos and stories from your own life. Get together with your sister or friend and cook up a recipe together! Bring your book to a local pub and plan out the recipes you want to tackle.

Every other Monday, we’ll post Book Club “challenges” for the assigned chapters. You pick a recipe from the selection- anything you’d like- and then make it in your home and attempt the “challenge”. Maybe the challenge will be to take a photo of the finished product or to invite a friend over to join you in eating it! Some weeks, we’ll just pose questions for you to think about as we cook our way through the book. Then you can stop in the Book Club at anytime to chat, share photos, ideas and inspiration. You can even go back to past discussions and catch up! No stress! No pressure!

We are planning lots of surprises and extras for this round of the book club- you won’t want to miss it.

We are really excited to host the FSC Book Club over on Goodreads:

Goodreads is the largest site for readers and book recommendations in the world. We have more than 10,000,000 members who have added more than 370,000,000 books to their shelves. A home for casual readers and bona-fide bookworms alike, Goodreads users recommend books, compare what they are reading, keep track of what they’ve read and would like to read, find their next favorite book, form book clubs and much more.

Goodreads is perfectly set up to host virtual book clubs with many options for discussions, sharing photos and videos, answering polls and chatting. You can set your notification preferences so that you are alerted each time someone responds or to receive a daily/weekly digest of Book Club activity. You can also turn those notifications off, if you’d like. We think this will be a more organized, user-friendly format. We hope you agree!

HOW TO JOIN

  1. Sign up for a free account at Goodreads. Once you register, you can log in easily using your Facebook, Twitter or Google accounts if you’d like.
  2. Join the FSC Book Club & introduce yourself! This is your mini-assignment between now and September 24. Say hi on Goodreads and tell us about yourself! Bonus:  Follow@FSCBookClub on Twitter and “Like” From Scratch Club on Facebook too and follow our ‘FSC BOOK CLUB’ board on Pinterest
  3. Get your hands on a copy of The Homemade Pantry: 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying & Start Making. Flip through, get inspired and read the introduction. Get ready for our first book club “challenge”, which we’ll post in the Goodreads forum on Monday, September 24.

We are going to give you the options of sharing media on various forms of social media. First,  we have a brand new Twitter page just for the Book Club! Follow us at @FSCBookClub, where we’ll be tweeting along about the book, the recipes and the conversation. Take photos of your finished product and share them on our FSC Book Club Flickr GroupFacebookTwitterPinterestand Instagram. Follow our dedicated FSC Book Club board on Pinterest as we will be repinning your pictures, blog posts and other book club-related materials. Use the hashtag #FSCBookClub and tag us at @FSCBookClub so we can find you! Don’t know what those things are? That’s ok too. We’ll be posting recaps every so often here are the blog, so you can participate in the comment section of those posts.

QUESTIONS?

What if you don’t want to make anything from those chapters? What if you don’t eat dairy, gluten, etc? Well, you can absolutely modify recipes to fit your own preferences and dietary needs. I mean, obviously. We aren’t forcing you to make anything you don’t want to! You can also just skip the cooking for that week and get in on other conversations. The beauty of Alana’s cookbook is that in addition to being incredibly useful and practical, it reads like a beautiful memoir too. Alana shares personal experiences and anecdotes with each recipe, and we encourage you to do the same in this Book Club! Chime in and tell us how your chosen recipe turned out, who you made it with, where you served it and everything else.

More questions? Check out our Book Club FAQs right here. If you still have questions, leave a comment or post it on the GoodReads forumWe can’t wait to read and cook along with you!

You can visit the FSC Pantry on Amazon to buy a copy of Whole Grains for the New Generation and all other book club selections. A small portion of sales from our shop will come back to FSC to help support our free book club. Think of it as a tiny tip jar to keep everything running smoothly.
