{drink it up} Autumn Sangria. Apple Spice & Everything Nice

Mmmm Red or White?

The cool air is here, the leaves are starting to change, apple and spice something is baking all over town and most importantly, it is wine season for me. I love wine and as the nights get chilly nothing warms me like a nice glass of red, while eating warm from the oven apple crisp. I decided there had to be a way to satisfy this need in one glass, without some super sweet concoction with carmel drippings and whipped cream. Fresh fruit, apple cider, wine, whiskey and ginger brandy sangria were more of what I was thinking!

So here you have it, two wonderful Autumn Spiced Apple Sangria Recipes. I also threw in something yummy for the kids with the extra fruit.

As Billy Joel said-“A bottle of red, A bottle of white, Whatever kind of mood your in tonight, I’ll meet you anytime you want at my Autumn Sangria Restaurant”…or something like that.

***Both these recipes fit perfectly into a 1/2 gallon ball jar. The jar is also the perfect way to bring this to your next gathering. It travels well and tied up pretty with a bow it makes a great hostess gift.

White

RECIPE: WHITE SPICED APPLE SANGRIA

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 Bottle of white wine (use what you like, I think the crispness of a Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 3 Cups good quality apple cider
  • 1/2 Cup Ginger Brandy
  • 2-3 Medium apples
  • 2-3 Medium pears (you could do all apple if you like, but I had fresh picked pears on hand)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • A pinch of nutmeg (freshly grated if you have it)
  • 1-2 tablespoons honey

METHODS

Chop fruit however you like I prefer bite sized chunks, some like slices. Combine chopped fruit, honey and cinnamon. Place fruit in large jar or pitcher, pour in the rest of the ingredients and stir or shake well.

Fruit in the jar

You can drink right away, but allowing it to sit for an hour or more infuses the flavor. This will keep in the refrigerator for a few days, but the fruit becomes a little too alcohol soaked after much more than that.

I prefer to drink this chilled or at room temp, but if you enjoy a warm mulled cider feel go for it and heat this baby up a little.

Red

RECIPE #2: RED SPICED APPLE SANGRIA

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Bottle red wine (again use what you like, I prefer a more dry less sweet red)
  • 3 Cups good quality apple cider
  • 1/3 cup Whiskey (I used a Rye Whiskey because that is what I had on hand)
  • 5-6 Medium apples
  • 1-2 Sliced oranges (with peel still on)
  • 2 Teaspoons sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • A pinch of nutmeg (freshly grated if you have it)
  • A pinch of black pepper, freshly ground is best

METHODS

Follow the steps above and mix fruit, sugar and spices prior to adding the other ingredients and place in jar or pitcher. Serving suggestion from above also apply.

Hint for the kids or the non-drinker in your life: Chop up a little extra fruit and mix with the spices. Place fruit in cider and serve warm or cold. Everybody loves a fancy drink!

Enjoy!
