{weekend reading} IRENE EDITION

This was my special note in last week’s {weekend reading}:

SPECIAL NOTE: We want to wish all of our fellow East Coast friends a safe weekend. Hurricane Irene seems like it will indeed be a doozie!

Boy was it. Schoharie County has mostly been washed away and locally many farms and families are trying to clean up the damage. We wish everyone a safe and quick recovery. Many fundraisers are happening this weekend. This is not a full list but at least its a start!

LOCAL IRENE FUNDRAISERS OR DONATION CENTERS

- Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany is taking and matching (up to $10k) in donations for farms impacted by Irene.

- The Delmar Farmers Market will be collecting desperately needed supplies for the local victims of Hurricane Irene. Items will be collected at the market (332 Kenwood Ave, Delmar) Saturday, 9/3 and 9/10 9am-1pm. All donations will be given to the Schoharie County Community Action Program to distribute to those in need.

Items needed: water, non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies (bleach, gloves, sponges, mops), diapers, pet food, new underwear, socks, toilet paper, toiletries, hygiene items.”

-Britin & Nick and Sarah from Farmie Market, are having a fundraiser on Causes.Com: The Regional Farm and Food Project is a member supported, farmer focused, non-profit serving the greater Hudson-Mohawk Valley food shed of New York State. The organization advocates for the improvement of local food systems and helping consumers connect to their local farms. All proceeds from this Cause Campaign will be dispersed to farmers in the Greater Capital Region affected by Hurricane Irene to provide financial relief for lost sales, crops, livestock, damaged infrastructure, and other financial burdens incurred by farmers as a result of the storm.

- A small library in the Adirondacks lost all of their children’s books to the Irene flooding. Please consider donating if you can. There are lots of pictures in this post that show the mess.

Ms. Kate Payne is coming back to town!! September 14-15th- grab your cheesecloth, some vinegar and salt and a swap item and let’s party!

September 14th, FSC Presents: Kate Payne Pickling & Fermenting Vegetables Demo at the Troy Farmers Market, 3-6pm. Come join the ladies of FSC and Kate Payne while she demonstrated easy ways to ferment and pickle local vegetables at the farmers markets.

September 15th, FSC Presents: An Intimate Evening with Kate Payne at Spoon & Whisk, 7pm. Join Spoon & Whisk, the ladies of From Scratch Club, and Harper Collins author, Kate Payne, blogger and author of Hip Girl’s Guide to Homemaking: Decorating, Dining, and the Gratifying Pleasures of Self-Sufficiency–on a Budget!, on Thursday, September 15th at 7pm for a vegetable pickling and fermenting demonstration led by Ms. Payne, a mini food swap and book buying-n-signing at Spoon and Whisk located at 1675 Route 9, Clifton Park, NY. There will be books available for purchase and Kate as graciously offered to sign them! If you would like to participate in the mini-sized food swap, please bring one handmade food item to swap for another, made by a fellow attendee!
We hope you’ll join us to meet Kate, share food and celebrate things that happen at home.

LOCAL FOOD AND FARMING EVENTS

Saturday, September 3rd 9am-2pm. SARATOGA P.L.A.N. Guided Kayak Tour on Fish Creek – history and paddling Grangerville to Victory Mills (Hayes Rd. to Mennen Rd.) Paddle leisurely through this bayou-like area, stop at the Saratoga Rod and Gun Club easement for lunch, and take out before rapids in Victory Mills. Discuss the importance of the area in revolutionary war times and take an optional group trip to the Historic Schuyler House (or the Corbett site) afterwards. Contact Andy Fyfe, Stewardship Director at  andy@saratogaplan for reservations.

September 10 & 11, Washington County Cheese Tour, all day. From freshly made Chevre to ripened Camembert-style cheeses and aged Cheddar, the fifth annual Washington County Cheese Tour will delight palates and enthrall cheese lovers of every age. Five creative farmstead cheese makers in Washington County will open their farms to the public. On a self-guided tour, visitors will drive through lush, rolling hills and bucolic countryside using a special cheese lover’s passport and map. The only prerequisite is an appetite and interest in learning about and sampling award-winning local cheeses and enjoying the changing colors of our famed maple trees.

At each farm, guests will sample specially selected cheeses while experiencing first hand the region’s long-standing cheese making traditions reaching back to the nineteenth century. All are active farms, raising cows, sheep and goats that supply the milk for the cheese-making process. Participating farms include: 3-Corner Field Farm (Shushan, NY), Argyle Cheese Farmer (Argyle, NY), Consider Bardwell Farm (West Pawlet, VT), Longview Farm (Argyle, NY), and Sweet Spring Farm (Argyle, NY).

September 11th, 2-4pm, Walk on the Wild Side, Joslin Lane Farm, Buskirk. Free workshop, registration requested. Naturalist Howard Romack will lead a family-friendly walk on the ecologically diverse Joslin Lane Farm to find out what’s flying and scurrying in the woods, wetlands and fields around us. In addition to the interesting creatures we’ll surely find, Howard will bring a number of “friends” with him. This is an Agricultural Stewardship Association event.

September 15th 5-8:30pm Feast of the Fields, Saratoga P.L.A.N., Saratoga National Golf Club. Feast of the Fields is an event that pairs farm products of the Saratoga region with the culinary talents of our local chefs. The event is held at Saratoga National Golf Club boasting views of a 135-acre conservation easement. Proceeds from this event will help conserve farmland, natural areas, trail corridors and historic places in Saratoga County. Tickets are $50.00 per person, advance registration required.
