June 26th: Farm Tour at Elihu Farm, 2-4pm, 654 Beadle Hill Road, Easton, call 753-7838 for directions. Come tour the farm where Bob and Mary Pratt raise sheep, about 100 adults and 150 lambs for food and fiber which they sell through the Saratoga Farmers Market. They also have 600 laying chickens and 100 geese on their 150-acre farm, which was conserved by the Agricultural Stewardship Alliance in 1995. A portion of the farm has also been protected through the Federal Wetlands Reserve program
July 17th: Saratoga P.L.A.N. and Agricultural Stewardship Association bring their 2nd Annual Tour De Farm a 15 or 35 mile bike ride around the farmland and historic sites within the “viewshed” of Saratoga National Historical Park. Quoted from the press release “Why should I ride? The funds raised will go to land conservation in this special area of the upper Hudson Valley. Riders will learn about interesting farms and historical sites along the way that have been relatively unchanged since the 1777 Battle of Saratoga. There will also be a delicious picnic featuring local food and refreshments at the finish!” Reserve your spot here!

Eager to start homesteading in your urban or suburban lot? Wondering how to fit anything into the small space you have? How to begin? This workshop is an opportunity to learn about the different elements that make up an urban homestead and how to put them together in whatever space you have. Ask questions about the limitations and opportunities of both your land and your lifestyle, and start putting the design elements together. This workshop will offer some basics in permaculture design, as well as some common sense how-to projects for the urban homestead. This workshop is experiential–come with your questions and ideas and expect to experiment with a variety of homesteading options.”
September 10 & 11, Washington County Cheese Tour, all day. From freshly made Chevre to ripened Camembert-style cheeses and aged Cheddar, the fifth annual Washington County Cheese Tour will delight palates and enthrall cheese lovers of every age. On Saturday and Sunday, September 10 and 11, 2011, five creative farmstead cheese makers in Washington County will open their farms to the public. On a self-guided tour, visitors will drive through lush, rolling hills and bucolic countryside using a special cheese lover’s passport and map. The only prerequisite is an appetite and interest in learning about and sampling award-winning local cheeses and enjoying the changing colors of our famed maple trees.
At each farm, guests will sample specially selected cheeses while experiencing first hand the region’s long-standing cheese making traditions reaching back to the nineteenth century. All are active farms, raising cows, sheep and goats that supply the milk for the cheese-making process. Participating farms include: 3-Corner Field Farm (Shushan, NY), Argyle Cheese Farmer (Argyle, NY), Consider Bardwell Farm (West Pawlet, VT), Longview Farm (Argyle, NY), and Sweet Spring Farm (Argyle, NY).
